Magdalene came on the same scene right about the same time as me she played guitar and she followed the stars from the pages of a magazine we went out to the City of Angels where the sidewalks are paved with gold and the people are drinking from the fountain of youth so that they never have to get old we were the next big things rising heading for the coast we were rock and roll kids with a burning obsession for G-d only knows we got lost with the bright lights burning our eyes too close to the sun she took off about as soon as we landed for the promise of a chosen one I got a gig in a strip club just about a state's drive out of town playing covers of To Lefty from Willie for the perpetually down we were the next big things rising headed for the coast we were rock and roll kids with a burning obsession for G-d only knows when she came in asking for a job and a glass of wine looking like an out of luck actress who'd forgotten her lines I said Magdalene don't you remember me we were kids once and we were young running for the stages and the silver screens and the promise of a little fun? she said yes of course I remember those fountains they never get old I'll take one more shot of that give it all we got cause that's a drink that's best served cold we were the next big things rising headed for the coast we were rock and roll kids with a burning obsession for rock and roll kids with a burning obsession for rock and roll kids with a burning obsession for G-d only knows
